Hog Wire Deck Railing in North Georgia

The railing that all but disappears. Welded wire mesh panels framed in wood or steel, so the mountain stays in the picture, the dog stays on the deck, and the cost lands well under cable.

Start With the Basics

What Hog Wire Railing Actually Is

Hog wire railing is a panel system. Sheets of welded wire mesh, the same heavy gauge grid originally made for livestock pens, get cut to size and captured inside a frame of wood posts and rails or a steel surround. The result reads as a grid rather than a wall, which is why people who build for a view keep choosing it.

You will also see it sold as hog panel railing, welded wire railing or wire mesh deck railing. Same idea in every case, and the differences that actually matter are gauge, grid opening, finish and how the panel is held.

It sits in a genuinely useful spot in the market. More open than wood balusters, noticeably cheaper than cable, tougher than either against a dog that leans. For ranch, farmhouse and mountain properties across the foothills it tends to look like it belonged there all along.

Anatomy of a panel

The mesh
Welded steel wire, typically 4 or 6 gauge, in a rectangular grid rather than a woven weave. Rigid, not floppy.
The opening
Grid spacing chosen so a 4 inch sphere cannot pass, which is what keeps the railing legal as a guard.
The frame
Pressure treated or cedar posts and rails, or a welded steel surround for a leaner modern line.
The capture
Panel set into a routed groove or held by a batten. Never stapled to the face, which is how cheap installs fail.
The finish
Black powder coat, galvanized silver, or raw steel left to develop a patina on purpose.

Hog Wire Railing Panels and Frame Options

Six decisions turn the same basic idea into six quite different railings. We bring samples of each so you can see the grid against your actual view.
Gray-brown composite deck with picture-frame border boards and pressure-treated wire mesh railing beside a wooded fence line

Black Powder-Coated Panels

The most requested finish. The dark grid recedes visually against foliage and almost vanishes from a few steps back.
Repaired elevated deck with new wire mesh railing and boards set on retained older support posts

Galvanized Silver Mesh

Zinc coated and bright. Reads more agricultural and more honest, and it is the best value per linear foot in the range.
Warm stained wood deck bordered by wire mesh railing in heavy cedar frames overlooking a wooded drive

Wood-Framed Panels

Cedar or pressure treated posts and rails around the mesh. Warm, traditional, and the easiest to stain to match an existing deck.
Hinged pressure-treated deck gate with black metal balusters at the head of brown composite steps

Steel-Framed Panels

A welded metal surround instead of timber. Thinner sightlines, a sharper modern edge, and no rail to refinish later.
Elevated pressure-treated deck with black wire mesh infill railing carried down the full staircase to a concrete pad

Custom Panel Sizing

Bays sized to your post spacing rather than forcing your deck to match a stock panel. Fabricated for the run we measured.
New pressure-treated deck with black wire mesh railing and a stair run rising to an upper level in dense woods

Stair and Landing Runs

Raked panels cut to the stringer angle so the grid follows the stairs cleanly instead of stepping awkwardly.
The Case For It

Why Homeowners Pick Wire Mesh Deck Railing

The view survives

A grid of thin wire blocks a fraction of what balusters do. On a ridge lot that difference is the entire reason you built the deck.

Dogs and toddlers stay put

A rigid grid has nothing to squeeze through and nothing to climb like a ladder, which is the usual complaint about horizontal cable.

It costs less than cable

Panels install far faster than tensioning dozens of individual cable runs, and the hardware bill is a fraction of it.

It suits the architecture here

Farmhouse, cabin and ranch homes across the foothills wear a wire grid naturally. On the right house it looks intentional rather than trendy.
The Real Decision

Hog Wire or Cable, Honestly Compared

These two are the finalists for almost every view-first deck we quote. We install both, so here is the comparison without a thumb on the scale.
Hog wire panels
YOU'RE HERE
Noticeably lower cost per linear foot
Nothing to re-tension, ever
Better with dogs, cats and climbing toddlers
Faster install, so shorter time on your deck
Grid pattern is visible up close
Cable railing
The most invisible option at any distance
Cleanest fit on contemporary architecture
Premium hardware, premium price
Needs periodic tension checks
Horizontal runs can tempt a climber

The Question Inspectors Ask

Making Wire Mesh Pass Inspection

Mesh railings have one code question all their own, and getting it wrong means pulling the panels back off.

Two numbers decide it

Everything else about a guard is the same as any railing. These two are where wire mesh specifically gets approved or rejected.

4 inchesNo opening in the guard may pass a sphere this size. It governs your grid spacing, and it is why we spec the panel before we spec the frame.

36 inchesMinimum guard height for a residential deck in Georgia. Panels are fabricated to suit rather than trimmed to fit on site.

Panels also have to resist a concentrated load without deflecting, which is a framing and capture question rather than a mesh one. Full requirements, including how counties differ, live in our Georgia deck code guide.

How It Works

Our Hog Wire Railing Installation

Four steps, and the measuring is the one that decides how it looks.
1

Samples on your deck

Black, galvanized and framed options held up against your actual view, in your actual light. Photographs never settle this one.
2

Measure and lay out the bays

Post spacing planned so panels land evenly and no run ends on an awkward sliver. This is what separates a good job from an obvious one.
3

Fabricate and finish

Panels cut and framed to the measured bays, finishes applied before installation rather than touched up afterwards.
4

Install, inspect, walk it

Panels captured properly, posts checked for rigidity, sphere test verified, then we walk the whole run with you.

The NGE Difference

Why Panel Work Rewards a Careful Crew

01

Bays Measured First

We lay out post spacing around the panels rather than cutting panels to fit whatever posts landed. Even bays are the whole look.
02

Captured, Not Stapled

Mesh set into routed grooves or held by battens. Face-stapled panels bow within a season and look homemade immediately.
03

Posts Stiff Enough

A guard has to resist real force. Panels only feel solid when the posts behind them are blocked and bolted properly.
04

Sphere Tested On Site

We check the 4 inch rule ourselves before the inspector does, on every bay including the stair runs where it is easiest to miss.

$95 – $120 / lf
Steel-framed panels
$110 – $130 / lf
Raked stair runs
