Cable Deck Railing, and Why People Pay For It

Cable railing replaces balusters with horizontal runs of tensioned stainless steel, usually an eighth or a quarter inch thick. From a few steps back the cables read as faint lines rather than a barrier, which is as close to an open edge as a legal guard can get.

That is the entire proposition, and it is worth being blunt about the trade. Cable costs meaningfully more than any other infill we install, it takes longer to fit, and it asks for a tension check every so often. What you buy is the view, and on the right deck that purchase is obvious the moment you walk out the door.

We fit Vista View systems as our standard because the hardware holds tension properly and the fittings are serviceable years later. Posts can be wood, powder-coated aluminium or welded steel depending on how much of the frame you want to see.

What a cable railing system is made of

Four parts, and three of them are hardware. The cable is the cheap bit.
The cable
1x19 stainless strand, typically 316 grade for outdoor use. Stiffer than rope-lay cable so it stays straighter under load.
The fittings
Swaged or field-attachable ends. These carry the whole tension, and they are where cheap systems fail first.
The tensioners
Threaded terminals that let each run be brought up to spec individually and adjusted later without cutting.
The posts
The real structural work. Every post resists the combined pull of every cable, so blocking and fixings matter more here than on any other railing.

Where Cable Railing Earns Its Price

We quote a lot of cable and talk roughly a third of people out of it. These are the four situations where it is clearly the right answer.
Long sightlines

You built the deck for a view

Ridge lots, lake frontage, anywhere the horizon is the point. Cable takes the smallest bite out of a wide view of any guard on the market.
Contemporary homes

The architecture is already lean

Modern and transitional houses wear thin horizontal lines naturally. Balusters on the same elevation look fussy by comparison.
Elevated decks

The deck sits high off the ground

On a tall deck the railing dominates the elevation from below. Cable keeps the structure looking light instead of caged.
Stair runs

Long open stairs to the yard

Raked cable on a stair run is one of the best-looking details in deck building, and it keeps the descent feeling open rather than tunnelled.

Cable is the only railing we install that asks something of you after we leave. Here is exactly what, so nobody is surprised in year two.

Four things to know before you commit

None of these are reasons to avoid cable. They are reasons to have it installed by someone who has done it before.
It stretches
New stainless relaxes slightly in the first season. We come back and re-tension once as part of the job rather than leaving it to you.
Then it settles
After that first adjustment, a checkup every couple of years is plenty. It is a five minute job with the right tool.
Posts must be stiff
Every cable pulls on every post. Flex in the frame shows up as sag in the cables, which is why we over-build posts on cable jobs specifically.
Spacing is unforgiving
Cables need intermediate support on long runs or they deflect enough to fail inspection. That spacing gets designed, not eyeballed.

Cable Spacing and the Deflection Rule

Cable has a code problem that solid infill does not, and it is the single most common reason a cable railing gets rejected.

Two numbers, and one of them moves

Guard height is the easy part. The hard part is that cable can be pushed apart, and inspectors test exactly that.

How It Works

Our Cable Railing Installation Process

Five steps, and the post layout in step two decides whether the finished run looks taut or tired.

See it against your view

Cable diameter, post material and fitting style shown on site. The difference between an eighth and a quarter inch is invisible in a brochure and obvious in person.
2

Engineer the post layout

Spans set so cables cannot deflect past code, with intermediate supports planned where a run is long. This is the step that separates a good cable job from a sagging one.

Set and reinforce posts

Blocked, bolted and braced for combined cable load. On cable jobs we build posts stiffer than a baluster railing would ever need.
4

Run, terminate and tension

Cables cut, fittings swaged, then each run brought up to specification in sequence so the frame loads evenly rather than pulling to one side.
5

Deflection check, then a return visit

We test the spacing under pressure ourselves before the inspector does, and we come back once after the first season to take up the initial stretch.
