What counts as hardscaping?
The built, non-living parts of a landscape: patios, walls, fire features, outdoor kitchens, steps, walkways and shade structures. Softscape is the plants. Most great backyards are about one-third hardscape by area, which is what makes the green parts usable in every season.
Can I put a fire pit on my deck?
A wood-burning pit, no. Embers and combustible framing are a genuinely bad mix, whatever a pad under it claims. A gas fire table, yes, with manufacturer clearances and shielding honored. Heavy masonry fireplaces belong on an engineered patio base, often placed just off the deck so both spaces share the fire.
How much does an outdoor kitchen cost?
Most run $12k to $35k+ in North Georgia depending on counter length, appliances and utility runs. A grill island with storage sits at the lower end; add refrigeration, a sink and bar seating and you climb. We design to your budget number first, then spec appliances to fit it.
Do fire pits or outdoor kitchens need permits?
The stone itself usually doesn’t, but the utilities often do. Plumbed gas lines and new electrical circuits typically require permits and licensed connections, and we handle both. Wood-burning features also need to respect county burn rules and property-line setbacks, which we confirm during design.
Should a pergola be attached to the house or freestanding?
Freestanding over a patio gives flexibility and skips roof tie-in work. Attached versions integrate beautifully with deck projects but involve your home’s structure, so they’re best planned alongside a deck build. We’ll recommend based on your layout, shade goals and budget.
Can we build the backyard in phases?
Absolutely, and we encourage it. The master plan gets designed once, utilities get stubbed where future features will land, and you build patio this year, kitchen next. Phasing done without a plan is how people pay to tear out last year’s work, so we plan first.
