Do I need a permit or an engineer for a retaining wall?
Generally yes once the wall reaches about four feet, and also at lower heights when something heavy sits above it, like a driveway, pool or structure. Below that threshold, most North Georgia counties treat a simple wall as landscaping. We confirm your county’s requirements during the assessment and coordinate stamped drawings when they’re needed.
My wall is leaning. Can it be repaired or does it need rebuilding?
It depends on why it’s moving. Cosmetic bulging in a short wall can sometimes be reset. Leaning caused by missing drainage or absent reinforcement means the wall is failing structurally, and rebuilding is the honest answer since the original mistake is buried behind it. We’ll tell you which yours is, with photos, even when the answer costs more.
Will a retaining wall fix my erosion or drainage problem?
Often yes, when it’s designed as part of a water plan rather than dropped in front of the symptom. Walls hold soil, but water still needs somewhere to go, so we grade the top, daylight the drain, and route downspouts before we build. A wall installed without that plan simply becomes the next thing the water attacks.
How long do retaining walls last?
A properly built block or stone wall with real drainage routinely lasts 30 to 50 years or more with essentially no maintenance. Timber walls are the opposite story: 15 to 20 years at best in Georgia moisture, which is why rebuilding rotted railroad-tie walls is one of our most common projects.
Should I build one tall wall or terrace the slope?
Terracing wins more often than people expect. Two or three shorter walls stepped back up the hill can skip the engineering threshold, plant beautifully, and cost less than one tall engineered wall.
