Georgia Deck Railing Height Requirements | North Georgia Elite Decks

Learn the required deck guard and railing heights in Georgia for residential and commercial decks, including stair rules and spacing requirements for code compliant construction.

Guardrail vs handrail explained clearly

A guardrail is the barrier that prevents falls off the edge of a deck, porch, landing, or stair. A handrail is the part you grab while walking up or down stairs. Many decks only require guards. Stairs usually require handrails. In some designs, the top of the guard can also function as the handrail, but only if the height meets stair code requirements.

Georgia building code baseline

Georgia follows the International Residential Code and International Building Code with state amendments. Most residential deck projects fall under the IRC, while commercial and multifamily properties fall under the IBC.

Residential deck railing height

For one and two family homes, deck guards must be a minimum of 36 inches high. This height is measured vertically from the finished deck walking surface to the top of the guard.

Stair railing height requirements

On stairs, guard height is measured differently. The minimum guard height on the open side of stairs is 34 inches, measured vertically from a line connecting the stair nosings. If the top rail is also acting as the handrail, it must fall within the allowed stair handrail height range to pass inspection.

Commercial and multifamily decks

Commercial properties and multifamily buildings typically require a minimum guard height of 42 inches. If a project is classified under the IBC, this is the height inspectors expect to see unless a very specific exception applies.

When a railing is required

A guard is required when the deck or walking surface is more than 30 inches above the grade or floor below. This applies to decks, porches, landings, and open sides of stairs.

Baluster and opening spacing

Guard systems must be built so a 4 inch sphere cannot pass through any opening. To account for wood movement, most professional builds space balusters slightly tighter than 4 inches to stay compliant long term.

How we build rails at North Georgia Elite Decks

For residential decks, we build guards to a true minimum of 36 inches and design stair guards based on correct nosing measurements. For projects near commercial classification, we default to 42 inch guards to avoid permit or inspection issues. Every rail layout is designed to stay compliant after seasonal movement, not just on inspection day.
